We, the undersigned staff, faculty, students and community members at the University of California system, oppose the tuition increases proposed by the Regents.

California became the economic powerhouse it is today through investment in affordable, accessible, high quality public higher education. Raising student fees erodes our commitment to the California Master Plan for Higher Education and our future.

We, call on the Regents of the University of California to lower student fees if the state commits to reinvest in higher education. Fees for California resident undergraduates have already increased 59% since the 2009-2010 academic year, far beyond wages and inflation over the last decade.

Much of the student aid provided by UC comes in the form of loans that doom students to decades of indebtedness. Let’s return to an attainable dream of higher education for all that inspired a previous generation of Californians. Let’s recommit to the Master Plan that guaranteed affordable, accessible, high quality public higher education! An educated public is essential to maintaining a democracy.

UC Regents, you must commit to lower student fees if the state commits to reinvest in higher education!
